baby paul was born on the 18th nov 08 at 01.55am - 25+5 days (born 15 wks early) by emergency
caesarean due to cord prolapse, BREECH as that was immediate threat to me or baby paul his weight
was 930grams (2lb's & 1 oz's) and breathing on his own, he was took up to NEONATAL UNIT and was
stable in ICU, and i was took to the CARDIAC WARD for 24 hr monitoring as my heart rate was slipping
while having my caesarean, i saw baby paul for the first time late wed night. that night the wee man
had a blood tranfusion and was comfortable.. the next few days he caught a chest infection, he was
forgettin to breath so he was put on the ventilater so he could have a rest while the infection was
gettin treated.. the next few days he was back off the ventilater and breathing on his own and he
was a wee rascal as his oxygen levels were up and down due to him keeping his mouth opened, then the
next few days he was back on the ventilater due to him catching another infection but he was tryin
to fight the ventilater by tryin to breath while being ventilated so they had to sedate him, then on
the 9th dec 08 we got a phone call at 08.50am and was told baby paul wasn't feeling too well could
we come up... once we were at the hosp baby paul was a funny colour and his tummy was all bloated
out, he got an x-ray and when they changed his nappy their was blood in it, we were told that he had
NECROTISING ENTEROCOLITIS known as NEC + PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOUS he only had 20% chance of
surviving this as its a miracle if they do, but he fought long and hard as the nurses & docs
weren't expecting him to last as long as he did..the poor wee guy had blood coming up out of his
mouth which was frightening for me and his daddy, he was critically ill the next few days so paul
decided to stay overnight with him on sunday the 14th dec 08 then i got a phone call on the monday
at 06.41am to come up as baby paul was very poorly, i got to the hosp at 07.10 but baby paul had
already past away at 7 am, the doc took all the tubes & needles out and we got to hold him for the
first time, baby paul gave up his fight as NEC just got too much for him and we're so proud of him
but he's in no more pain now...forgot to mention when baby paul past away we got asked if we wanted
a post morton on him just to see how bad NEC had infected his wee body and to check if their was
anything else but we said no as we'd thought he'd been thru enough just let him rest now...

WHAT IS NEC
Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious illness in which tissues in the intestine (gut) become
inflamed and start to die. This can lead to a perforation (hole) developing which allows the
contents of the intestine to leak into the abdomen (tummy). This can cause a very dangerous
infection.
NEC can be difficult to diagnose but the symptoms tend to include general signs of illness, problems
feeding, and a swollen and tender abdomen. NEC is the most common surgical emergency in newborn
babies and tends to affect more babies born prematurely than those born full-term. NEC seems to
becoming more common, but it is likely that this is because more premature babies are surviving.
UNFORTUNITLY BABY PAUL DIDN'T SURVIVE AS HE WAS TOO SMALL TO BE OPERATED ON, IF HE WAS THAT WE BIT
OLDER AND HIS WEE BODY HAD BEEN STRONG ENOUGH TO COPE WITH SURGERY THEN HE WOULD BE HERE TODAY

hey my little angel well as you know it was mummies birthday on wednesday and i wish you where with us to spend it with, we went upto your wee garden on thursday to cut the grass and clean it up abit, mummy and daddy miss you soo much, i'm still finding it hard to cope as mummy and daddy want a wee baby sis or bro for you and its just not happening for us, mummies going to the doc about it coz i just can't cope and i hate life without you wee man, i feel i have nothing to look forward too :( everywhere i turn theirs people having babies and mummy and daddy arent... its not fair little man, lifes not fair and i hate it soo much, well my little sweetheart i'm away just now but i will be back on soon, love you always and forever mummy and daddy xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
